

Professor Jim Walsh was appointed Vice-President for Innovation and Strategic Initiatives in September 2005. Prior to this appointment he was Head of the Department of Geography since 1995. He was also a founding member of the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) and the International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD). His research, which has resulted in over 140 academic publications has been mainly on patterns and processes related to the geography of demographic and socio-economic adjustments in Ireland and Europe with a special focus the role of spatial planning. Since 1995 he has obtained research grants totalling approximately €1.5 million under competitive conditions from the EU, OECD, government departments, state agencies, regional and local development agencies. In addition to his own research he has been appointed External Examiner for Doctoral theses by several universities.
Professor Walsh has been Chairman of the Regional Studies Association (Irish Branch), Vice President and President of the Geographical Society of Ireland and Chairman of the Royal Irish Academy National Committee for Geography. Outside of academia he has held many prestigious appointments including membership of the National Economic and Social Council (1998-2003), the National Rural Development Forum (2000-2005), and the Expert Advisory Group for National Spatial Strategy (2002-2001). He is currently the national Contact Point for ESPON, the European Spatial Planning Observation Network, and has participated in a number of ESPON research projects.
The Office of the Deputy President has responsibility for extending the role of the university through innovation, and for enhancing its contributions through teaching and research, and also through strategic partnerships, to economic and social development in its hinterland and more broadly throughout Ireland and internationally. The Deputy President is responsible for the implementation of the Strategic Innovation Fund. The office liaises with the Faculty Deans to oversee the implementation of the reorganisation of the Faculties. The Librarian, the Director of Computer Services and the Director of the Quality Office report to the Deputy President. The office is also responsible for the NUI Maynooth outreach campus at Kilkenny
